August 20, 2021— Dr. Paul Dayton, a board-certified podiatrist at Foot & Ankle Center of Iowa in Ankeny, Iowa recently published an article on 30 Seconds.com in which he discussed what bunions are and the treatment options currently available to patients living with them.

“During the initial evaluation and treatment in office, podiatrists often recommend that patients try conservative options first,” says Dr. Dayton. “These include buying wider shoes, padding or orthotics to accommodate the deformity and reduce pain. If conservative options fail to provide relief, surgical options are discussed.”

Dr. Dayton explained that traditional surgical methods that address bunions involve shaving down the protruding bone of the big toe before cutting and shifting the bone over, removing the cosmetic bump but failing to address the unstable joint in the foot. Also noting that even after recovering, up to 70 percent of patients who have had traditional bunionectomies can experience a recurrence of their bunion over time.1

Dr. Dayton also detailed Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction, which addresses the three-dimensional deformity that causes bunions by realigning the bones in the foot and securing them with small titanium plates. As one of the Lapiplasty® Procedure’s pioneering surgeons, Dr. Dayton has performed it on patients from many walks of life and of all ages. He enjoys seeing patients return to physical activities like walking, running, and biking without pain after recovering from surgery.

Dr. Dayton is a paid consultant of Treace Medical Concepts, Inc.
