Bunions: What are they and how are they treated?

August 13, 2020 – In an interview with KOGA-AM, a radio show broadcast throughout Southwest Nebraska and northeast Colorado (Denver-area), Bharat M. Desai, MD, discussed the Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction Procedure, a surgically-advanced treatment for bunions.

Dr. Desai, a Denver-based board-certified orthopedic surgeon, detailed how the surgery can fix the root cause of a bunion and help patients walk again, in just a matter of days in a walking boot. Osteotomy surgery was always the traditional “norm”, but never produced a complete correction since it doesn’t fix the root cause of the bunion.1
Specializing in foot and ankle conditions, Dr. Desai discussed how bunions are complex deformities caused by an unstable joint in the middle of the foot that allows the bones to drift out of alignment in three dimensions. Contrary to popular belief, a bunion cannot be “shaved off”. He has helped hundreds of patients correct their bunions with Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction which addresses the deformity with a 3D fix, so it lessens the chance of a bunion coming back.2,3

“Unlike other procedures, we’re fusing a joint that’s unstable back to a joint that’s stable,” Dr. Desai said during the interview.

Although every patient’s experience is different, to many patients’ surprise, they often experience a much easier recovery than they expect, getting back on their feet within days in a walking boot, with many able to partake in athletic activities again such as running and hiking, around four months after surgery.
