Hillary Topper on Air w/Dr. Vincent
June 27, 2025 – Dr. Ebonie Vincent from Orange County Podiatry recently spoke with Hilary Topper On Air about the science behind bunions, how this condition can impact a runner’s performance, and the treatment options available for the condition.
“When we’re thinking about bunions, we first have to know that it’s not just a bone that’s growing on the side of your foot,” said Dr. Vincent1,2. “It’s a biomechanical issue that most people are born with. Over time, genetically, you might be more prone to developing bunions, which can worsen over time3.”
Dr. Vincent explained that bunions are caused by the malalignment of the first metatarsal-cuneiform joint4,5. People with bunions often face challenges in finding comfortable shoes and may experience pain when putting weight on their feet. Dr. Vincent suggests trying noninvasive treatment options for bunions before considering corrective surgery6,7.
Dr. Vincent often uses a surgical technique called Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction®, which has demonstrated a low recurrence rate of 1-3 percent at 13 and 17 months post-op8,9. She also highlighted that this procedure enables a relatively smooth recovery process for most individuals10.
“I usually have my patients weightbearing, only in a walking boot, after about two weeks of non-weightbearing post-operation,” said Dr. Vincent11. “Depending on the patient and how well they recover after physical therapy, many marathon runners can typically get back to their usual activities at around four months post-operation.12 ”
Only a surgeon can tell if the Lapiplasty® Procedure is right for you. Individual results may vary depending on age, weight, health, and other variables. There are risks and recovery takes time. For more information about recovery from the Lapiplasty® Procedure, see the recovery information and discuss the post-surgery recovery process with your doctor. Risks include infection, pain, implant loosening and loss of correction with improper bone healing. For more information on benefits, risks and recovery, visit Lapiplasty.com.
