Seek treatment for bunions to alleviate pain, increase mobility

May 1, 2025 – Dr. Amber Morra, an orthopedic surgeon from Vero Orthopedics in Vero Beach, FL, recently spoke with Vero News about the causes of bunions, the process for diagnosing the condition and how Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® can address the problem and help patients get back on their feet quickly1,2.

“A bunion is essentially when one of the bones in the foot starts to grow in an abnormal position and it starts to affect your gait,” said Dr. Morra. “They typically develop on the big toe, but a tailor’s bunion is the same deformity on the outside part of your foot along your little toe.”

Dr. Morra noted that bunions are often a genetic condition that can worsen because of poorly fitting shoes. People with flat feet or low arches are at a higher risk of developing bunions. Individuals with a family history of bunions may also be more likely to develop them3,4.

“If bunions are left untreated, they gradually get worse, to the point where the big toe pushes over and starts to lift your second and third toes up,” said Dr. Morra5. “There are things that can help prevent them, like wearing orthotics and splints, but unfortunately once you have a bunion, there’s no way to reverse it other than surgery6.”

Bunions are usually diagnosed via a physical exam and x-rays to determine how far the joint has shifted and whether there is any underlying damage. Initial nonsurgical treatments may focus on relieving pressure and improving foot alignment before moving forward with a surgical procedure7. Dr. Morra noted that modern advancements, including the Lapiplasty® Procedure, can allow surgeons to return the bone to its normal alignment and secure the unstable joint with titanium plates8,9.

“The good thing about all these modern procedures is that we are correcting it based on the apex of the deformity,” said Dr. Morra.

Only a surgeon can tell if the Lapiplasty® Procedure is right for you. Individual results may vary depending on age, weight, health, and other variables. There are risks and recovery takes time. For more information about recovery from the Lapiplasty® Procedure, see the recovery information and discuss the post-surgery recovery process with your doctor. Risks include infection, pain, implant loosening and loss of correction with improper bone healing. For more information on benefits, risks and recovery, visit Lapiplasty.com.
