Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® can help alleviate bunions

January 16, 2020 – In an interview with ABC affiliate WFAA’s Good Morning Texas in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Mojgan Tavakoli at Foot and Ankle Center of Frisco and Plano says, “bunions are a hereditary, progressive disorder” When asked by Good Morning Texas host Alanna Sarabia about surgical options Dr. Horst Knapp, also at Foot and Ankle Center of Frisco, said that people should consider bunion surgery “once the bunion becomes painful in shoes and stops you from performing the activities you want to do or the activities that you must do, it’s time to consider having surgery.”

Dr. Knapp explains that “pads and spacers between the toes do not address the root cause of the problem.” He also shares that traditional 2D bunion surgery “doesn’t address the root cause of the problem: the mid-foot joint” and that a major problem with this type of surgery is recurrence. “About 70% of the patients who have traditional 2D bunion surgery have bunion recurrence.”1 And, that an advantage of Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® is that “we use [two] titanium plates that allow patients to be early weight-bearing after surgery.”2

When asked about recovery time, Dr. Tavakoli shares patients can be “weight-bearing as early as two weeks in a protective boot and return to comfortable shoes in six weeks, and start running and performing exercises that they like.” She also notes that “since Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® is not just a cosmetic procedure… most insurances cover it, as well as Medicare.”
