This common foot problem is actually a ‘complex deformity’ — and can spell trouble if ignored

April 16, 2025 — Dr. Brad Schaeffer, a podiatrist at Central Park Sole in New York, NY, recently spoke with the New York Post about the myths surrounding bunions, why they are a condition that should not be ignored and how a surgical procedure like Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction® can help patients get back on their feet quickly1,2.

“There is a common misconception that bunions are simple calluses or overgrowths of bone on the side of the toe,” said Dr. Schaeffer. “But they are actually complex deformities stemming from an unstable joint in the foot that allows the big toe to drift out of alignment.”

Many myths surrounding bunions often prevent people from seeking treatment. While many think bunions only affect older women due to high heels and narrow shoes, the reality is that this condition affects nearly 25% of American adults, regardless of gender, age, or shoe choice3,4. While bunions are more commonly seen in older women, Dr. Schaeffer has also treated men and teenagers with the deformity.

“The condition often runs in families, which makes genetics one of the leading causes of bunions,” Dr. Schaeffer said , . “Weak mechanical structure — such as foot shape and structure — can result in such defects, and this is a trait that often runs in families7,8.”

Bunions may not be life-threatening, but Dr. Schaeffer warns that if ignored, they can worsen and lead to significant pain. Even active individuals may struggle with walking and daily activities as the deformity progresses . Dr. Schaeffer notes that there are nonsurgical options to address bunions at first.

However, if those options do not work, Dr. Schaeffer will address the bunion with the Lapiplasty® Procedure. This surgical fix restores the foot’s bone structure to its correct alignment and has shown recurrence rates as low as 97% and 99% in studies at 13 and 17 months respectively10.

Only a surgeon can tell if the Lapiplasty® Procedure is right for you. Individual results may vary depending on age, weight, health, and other variables. Lapiplasty is a surgical procedure, and there are risks and recovery takes time. For more information about recovery from the Lapiplasty® Procedure, see the recovery information and discuss the post-surgery recovery process with your doctor. Risks include infection, pain, implant loosening and loss of correction with improper bone healing. For more information on benefits, risks and recovery, visit Lapiplasty.com.
